Start with the existing infrastructure
Choosing IP or analog CCTV depends on cable condition, recorders, camera count and expansion needs. When upgrading, assess what can be retained before replacing the whole system. Model and version compatibility matter; matching connectors or brand names alone do not establish compatibility.
When can IP CCTV be suitable?
IP systems can suit network-based management, flexible integration and planned expansion. They require attention to addressing, power, switch capacity, storage and user accounts. Features vary between models, so check the actual requirements against the proposed equipment.
When might an existing analog system be retained?
Reusing sound existing cabling can be practical where cameras and recorders support the required image quality. Check cable condition, distance, power and real image performance before deciding. The label “analog” alone does not determine whether a system meets the site’s needs.
Compare the whole project cost
Include equipment, cabling, networking, storage, configuration and maintenance rather than camera price alone. Ask the installer to explain expansion limits, compatibility and retained components. A site assessment supports a decision based on the actual installation.
